Geist's official movie/tv recommendation thread

All the news from the peanut gallery and where all the nasty trash talk fails miserably.

Season 1 is the best season of The Expanse. The series blew its wad a little too quickly.

Invincible is good as long as you fast forward through every scene with the girlfriend. Not surprisingly, none of the plot will be missed.

Yeah, when it was good it was really good but "yikes" when it was bad it was really bad. A ton of really great moments but a lot of clunkers too. Overall still a great show. I wonder if they would do anything different in hindsight?
It was the best show ever in the first half. The last half was unwatchable. And it had absolutely the worst ending that could have been created.
It got really dumb when they realized they had to expand beyond simple character development and create nonsensical background stories when all we cared about was what was going on on the island.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?

i am not really sure what happened to that show. It was like the creator had never thought the story though any more than this mysterious island and had never intended to finish the story. And then they hired another group of writers to spread it out over a few more seasons and then come up with an ending. it never felt like the guy that thought up the first of it was the same guy that thought up the end of it.

Could it have been a casualty of the writers strike?

That's what basically took down "Heroes" too.

I thought seasons 2 and 3 were the best...and they let Avasarala start to get really salty. Invincible is just fun.

I remember watching some special one night with JJ Abrams where he sat down and talked about the show. It wasn't very far into the show and the hype was huge from people watching it. Anyway, I was so locked into that show at that point and wondering what was going on, so I was listening to that interview for any kind of clues.

Anyway, the one thing I remember was how he promised that everything in the show would be within the bounds of physically possible. In other words, no magic or impossible, or no plot twists that just didn't make sense. It would all make sense in the end.

I think it was me reconciling those statements with the smoke monster, the teleportation wheel, the island's healing powers, etc that made it all sort of get to be too much of an eye roll for me.

I've watched all the seasons. I thought it was decent. Kind of odd at points.
Brendan Fraser carries it.
Just as an FYI, the 2nd half of season 4 starts tomorrow on MAX.

Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey deserves the low ratings. I'm a fan of low budget horror but this is an example of exactly what not to do. The Pooh gang is supposed to be the actual creatures but the shitty costume design makes it impossible to see it as anything other than fat dudes in Halloween Express masks. The cinematography and sound design weren't bad, but that doesn't stretch very far when complemented by garage-tier acting, writing, and directing. This doesn't leave me excited for the impending slew of Disney darkverse movies. 1/10

Never seen anybody in more need of cutting the cable chord in my life. Probably go through withdrawal symptoms when he can't find this week's Dancing With the Stars

Guy Ritchies The Covenant was a pretty good action/war flick. Kind of a Rambo II/ Lone Survivor mash-up. It's worth a watch.

The Devil's Hour

2 episodes in and its pretty solid. I hope it keeps it going with this level of quality. It has a bit of a True Detective vibe to it but adds in some creepiness.

Each season is it's own story. There's "connective tissue" throughout each season with ties to the movie and even season-to-season.
