The problem is people always used bars as landmarks when giving directions. "Go down this street until you see Murphy's pub. Hand a right until you get to Shannhasey's..."

Google maps ruined everything.

I just started another thread about this - didn't realize the idea came from here. Can a mod combine them?

DWI concerns have got to be as big a contributing factor as the millennials.

My son drove down to see me from Pittsburgh last month. I took him to Cheddars, which has a beautiful bar. He asked if there were any regular taverns around where you could just have a drink and a smoke. Sadly, I couldn't think of one thats left.

Send him to the slut capital of Florida, Pasco County. Neighborhood gin mills are thriving

Or the lack of smoking which predicted this result when the legislation was passed.

We still have a few within a couple mile radius of Casa de CHEEZY.
We go once in awhile when the kids are gone and we're looking for some good "bar food".
Even in my bar hopping dog days I preferred the dive bar to the booming nightclub. The best Club Sandwich I've ever had was at a local bar near a friends house.

Tavern.jpg

I've posted this on a previous board. My great grandfather and his brothers each owned taverns prior and during prohibition. That's my great grandfather behind the bar with my great uncle standing on the bar. My grandparents bought the place and my dad grew up living above it in a very small town in Southern Illinois. Those patrons in the photo are either farmers or coal miners most likely.

Everyone in that photo would have been speaking German.

The small town I'm from in upstate NY had two little dive bars. When I was in high school Some friends and I went into one for the experience. On the end of the bar they had this giant ass jar with about 5 pickled eggs floating in brine. We dared each other to eat one but had no takers. I went back into the same dive bar some 15 years later and that jar was still there with three eggs. I'm betting they were the same eggs.

Not sure when the last time you've been to downtown Detroit but now it is fucking amazing. It is a complete turnaround. Greektown used to be the only place to go; now the entire downtown area is incredible. Homos and Millennials moved in and transformed it into what it shouldve always been. Worldclass restaurants, parks, museums, shopping, activities and historical things galore. The transformation is really quite remarkable.

Been at least 30 years. Would hit a rock show at Cobo Hall then whip over to Greektown for a bite. Was really the only semi-decent place back then.

As great as the transformation of downtown has been, I still would not venture too far away or you may not make it back.

There are certain areas where that is most certainly true. I had some friends from out of state visit a few years ago and I flat out told them "in between this area and this area do NOT, for any reason, get off the freeway or get out of your car."
