So and Astronaut and Noah's Ark
I was watching this documentary last night about Jim Irwin. He was an astronaut that went to the moon. Anyway, while on the moon they had trouble with getting the steering to work on the lunar rover. So he prayed that night and the next morning it worked. He took this as a sign of God being with him. Blah blah blah.
Dial it forward and he gets back to earth and decides he needs to minister. And in doing so, he figures out that the best way to do it is to find Noah's ark. So he devotes most of the rest of his life to finding that ark. And it turns out that Mt Ararat is not an ideal place to go hunting for stuff. Really cold and rocky there.
So, I'm having a hard time listening to much without wondering how an astronaut can think that water got high enough to put a boat up there in the first place.

Astronauts didn't invent anything, they were mostly fighter pilots who demonstrated an ability to withstand high g and follow orders. Religious delusion creeps in even amongst top notch scientists though, it's just far less common than amongst the gen pop. If you're smart enough to be smart you are less likely to have the neurological failings that make you believe in fairies, but it is clearly possible to be afflicted with them and also be smart in more practical ways. Sad but demonstrably true.Flumper wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 12:01 am I was watching this documentary last night about Jim Irwin. He was an astronaut that went to the moon. So, Mount Ararat is almost 17,000 feet high. Above 12,000 feet you can get sick without oxygen. That's a problem that I have never heard talked about on the ark.

He also did not take the Unicorns. They were hiding and playing silly games, and Noah just couldn't wait for them.

There was probably a dude named Jesus who scammed a bunch of ignorant believers. Mohammed probably saw how well it worked and decided to start his own brand. Not unlike a Graham or Olsteen today
I blame Biker.

Peter used a guy named Jesus to scam a bunch of ignorant believers. And thus began the most successful cult so far.

Re: So and Astronaut and Noah's Ark
Actually, the World flood story was recorded by many ancient civilizations. All almost identical (Well, except the Noah thing) Archeologists think they know where it comes from. A few hundred of thousands ago, before people, a land obstruction at the few mile wide Straight of Gibraltar gave way, flooding the Mediterranean and lowering World sea levels by hundreds of feet. Then, around 8,000 BC, the super narrow gap in the Dardanelles near modern day Instanbul, Turkey did the same thing and flooded the present day Black Sea within a year or two. They think that was what they were describing.

If the ark came to rest on Mount Ararat as the waters receded it would have been @ sea level - not 17,000 ft ASL. So, no problem with lack of oxygen until the water dropped a massive amount.

Yup, and all the water that magically appeared and disappeared is covered by magic, so there's really no scientific issue at all with the whole theory. Some of it of course just spilled over the edge of the flat earth, which is where comets come from.

Olsteen and Graham are just reselling the same story - the real examples would be Joseph Smith or L. Ron Hubbard.
