Anyone else got a kid that plays Select or club sports

My kid plays fastpitch softball. 12u. The parents are exhausting. Your kid isn't an all-star. They aren't getting scouted by D1 colleges. They are 12 years old. Shut up and get them a snowcone after the game.

I have a friend who's kid plays as high of a level of basketball as you pretty much can as a freshman in high school. They've moved twice so she can play on better teams. She's played on the USA U16 national team a few times and was a starter. She has multiple college scholarship offers before sophomore year even starts.

The mom is 100% all about this and quit her job to train and coach her. The dad isn't consulted and rarely attends the games. Another friend was listening to him tell about all the things she's doing and estimated they were spending nearly $20k per year for training, coaching, travel and league fees in the 5th grade.

So, SO glad my kid is a bookworm and not an athlete. I cant stand the typical sports parent attitude. Growing up that was my dad and I still remember how embarrassed and defeated he made me feel.

Plus it's such a huge financial scam. It really limits who has access to these traveling sports teams.

Travel hockey is all the rage here. I chuckle at all the parents who are spending thousands of dollars, wasting years of their life traveling to God knows where for little Billy to play hockey thinking hes gonna make it to the NHL.

Sorry, folks. If your kid was actually that good, scouts would already know about him when hes 13 or 14. 15 at the latest. Especially here in Michigan. If your kid is 16 or 17 and doesnt have NHL or minor league interest the best he can hope for is a college scholarship. With all the hockey though chances are little Billy isnt the greatest student. The odds of making the NHL at that point are ridiculously small.

My son played travel baseball. And I would pay the season fees happily if he was going to be the starting pitcher tomorrow. I don't regret a single minute.

Congrats on his success. My son and I made a decision when he was 14 to not play high school ball because we just watched pitcher after pitcher at his high school get ruined through overuse by the coaches.

My son was a co-captain of his swim team both junior and senior year, and full captain of his water polo team his senior year. His coach was an ex-SEAL which sparked my son's interest in going into the Navy SEALs, but unfortunately he has a nose and ear issue that ruled that out. He works now at Seaworld Discovery Cove as senior lifeguard trainer and monitor while going to college.

No shit! Having to get up at 4:30am to get my son to the swimming pool by 5:30am for two to three hours of practice before dropping him off at school... While I loved my son (and still do!), that crap got old quick. Still, it's made him good about getting his own ass out of bed to get shit done, something I really didn't have much of growing up on a consistent basis.

It has been a guilty pleasure seeing the “star” kids going to 3rd tier colleges years behind schedule. And the parents who changed stats eating the inevitable plateful of shit.

My kids all did club swimming. Only one had the talent to make it somewhat pay with a D1 college scholarship (partial). Most of the parents were pretty low-key although you had a few who would yell and scream from the stands or who were all about little Johnny or Suzy.
