Alice in Chains was really on a whole other level from most of the grunge bands they got lumped in with.

My experience was a bit different, I moved to Seattle in 1990 after graduating college and after hearing all the BS about Mudhoney and Motherlove Bone, Queensryke, Nirvana and Alice and Chains (Screaming Tree were guys I knew from the 'burg), it was clear to me that Soundgarden was the band that would break out of Seattle (and from Subpop) and make it big. I saw AIC at Bumbershoot when the singer still had that HUGE dread on the top of his head, and I thought they were god awful. Now maybe they were really whacked at that show because later songs on Mtv were polisihed, but when I saw them it was very yuk.

Remember Sky Cries Mary or Seven Year Bitch? I thought both of those bands were further along than AIC at the time.

Yes, I was obsessed with Sky Cries Mary. Did you ever watch the Spud Goodman show? He featured a LOT of really talented Seattle artists at the time.

It was Seattle based, for sure, but I seem to recall it was maybe on public access? I've killed a lot of brain cells since then.

I was in Seattle for barely a year, moved to Bellingham in 1991

Agreed. Love Cantrell's guitar tone and style and Staley could add some raw emotion to a lyric few others could match. To me Soundgarden was all about Chris Cornell. Seemed like with a few exceptions his songs were clearly the best from the group.
Pearl Jam's first 3 albums were incredibly solid.

Soundgarden had some sick riffs in their early days but no one can touch Jerry Cantrell. The fact theyve been able to transition to a new singer and still find success 25 years later really speaks to their talent and lasting power.
