Apparently, it's going to be an entirely new set of characters. What's unknown is what Star Trek era it will be set in. (original Trek, Next Gen... etc.) Perhaps it will be set in an entirely new Star Trek era.
Rehashing the Kirk/Spock era would be a mistake seeing how the Chris Pine reboot films are still doing quite well.

I can almost see how Tarantino's Star Trek would probably turn out. Crew gets stranded in the Beta Quadrant. Passing alien ships beg Kirk to allow them to use the Enterprise for their Dead N*gger Storage Area. *eyeroll*
