WTC, you have a place to go hog hunting around there? I'm looking for ways to spend my freed up time and money and getting wild bacon seems like a good idea.

Re: So be honest
hmm. well you said East Texas. East texas is really sandy (pine trees). naturally occurring ponds would be a rarity in sandy soil. Talco is in North East Texas (not many pine trees and more of a clay soil) and is not real far from where I grew up. Its on the Sulphur River. Extremely low lying land. I guess those ponds, scattered that close together could be a result of flood plain water. It wouldn't be from drilling and if they aren't right next to the road, they wouldn't likely be from road building.DandyDon wrote: ↑Sun Jan 27, 2019 2:10 amI dont think thats the case. They were everywhere, not just near roads (fucking place is flat as a parking lot anyway - why raise a flat dirt bed?). There might be 13 in a 1/2 mile square, or 5 in a string 50 yards apart on the side of the road, some 100 yards across, and some 20 ft across. WTC's first explanation makes more sense.
There is only one lake (i know we aren't talking about lakes here) in the entire state of texas that is not man made.
Re: So be honest
Uh, Yeah. Just the entire Eastern 2/3 of the state. No license needed, no season dates. Open season 365. Have at it. Can even legally hunt them from a helicopter. My State really hates them. [url][/
Re: So be honest
The entire Eastern part of Texas has the water table really close to the surface. It's why nobody has basements. Also (and I'm talking extreme East TX), even when go from the Gulf (sea level) 300 miles N, you are still talking pretty low altitudes. Talco, for example is in Titus County almost at the OK border and it's highest elevation is only 500+ feet. To give perspective, I live at an altitude of over 3,000 feet.Flumper wrote: ↑Sun Jan 27, 2019 5:48 pmhmm. well you said East Texas. If you decide to do it, first of all don't go to west texas. Stay closer to the middle and eastern parts of texas. Second, only go after the ones 100 lbs or less, and if you get one over 100 lbs, only take the sows. Trapping them is much easier than hunting them and traps are really easy to make.

How much meat do you get off of one hog 100 lb hog? I know they are a nuisance and a destructive force to be handled with extreme prejudice, but if I killing it I want to be able to use it. Just a personal thing.Flumper wrote: ↑Sun Jan 27, 2019 8:12 pmIf you decide to do it, first of all don't go to west texas. Stay closer to the middle and eastern parts of texas. well, off a 100 lb feral pig, you'd probably get around 50 lbs. I use 50% as a rough guide. You might get a little more, depending on how good you are at cleaning one. Sow's aren't too much of a problem, you can clean a 250 lb or larger sow and get good meat. But the boars? I would't touch the big ones for the meat. You'll know why when you get one. The reason I prefer trapping them is because its a lot easier. Hogs are not easy to hunt and they are fast as hell and mostly move at night. Plus, with trapping you can design a trap that only catches the smaller ones. And they are worth it. Some of the best meat you can get.Blast wrote: ↑Sun Jan 27, 2019 8:27 pmHow much meat do you get off of one hog 100 lb hog? Nice length on the brow tines and the main beam, but not a very good looking rack for an axis. I like them more bowed and the brow tines to have more of a handle bar shape. He looks young.
Re: So be honest
OK, and now to "THE GLOBAL". After being THE top producer for the 1st 100 years of the oil industry, the US saw the Middle East with their huge fields dominate rapidly from the 50's-70's. With our economy based on oil, 60's-80's represented (ours and Europe's trade imbalance) as the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind. Our production peaked in the 70's with all the 55 MPH speed limits, Carter's "turn down your thermos", all the way to George W's dumb using our crops to make ethanol. We have been consistent using 12-15 million BPD- 60-80% imported.
Re: So be honest
Now flash forward just 15 years to the present. Tech from Texas and surrounding States and we just passed Russia as the top producer. 6 years from now we will producing more than than the 2 top combined (Russia and Saudi Arabia). 24 million BPD/ 50% exported. The vast majority of that is the shale plays here in the Permian Basin. Total imports last month from OPEC was a little over 100,000 BPD not seen since the 1940's. What I'm talking about is total Geo/Political/ Energy dominance worldwide that no one saw coming just a decade ago. Great for the country- really bad news for China.
