So the doorbell just rang, a couple of little Indian girls selling chocolate bars for the school whatever. I don't want the candy, but I always give them cash for their school things. It's funny, because, when I did, they both cocked their heads forward and started cooing, saying things like "thinkkyew" and "you're so sweet!"

And I remember thinking to myself, these girls have learned how to act like normal teenage girls. Some sort of internal mechanism whereby they can ape the white girls' behaviour.

Seriously, though, I was just thinking about how our neighborhood has changed, but little girls will always be little girls.

I was at a Jiffy Lube and there were two Latino couples, appeared to be from below Mexico, waiting for their cars. Their kids came in from outside... total American kids. No accents, or anything. And I doubt all their parents could even speak English. But the kids were just as American as mine.

Just an observation. When I was a kid in Europe, we did not integrate well with the euros. I suppose it was because I wasn't emigrating there. Some Americans did, however, and stayed. They had euro friends, adopted their customs. Here, we have some people who immigrate but don't assimilate. All I want is for Americans to be Americans.

I think most people here don't give two shits about the ethnicity of anyone coming to America. They worry about their values changing, and not for the better. Steady immigration brings with it integration, which is what we (I) want. Sure, march on St. Patty's day, etc. but be an American.

That's a "it is what it is" argument. I would argue that cultures bring with them good things and bad. And assimilation means not running around in your underwear, or tolerating any sort of secondary system of law, or somesuch. Like Sharia, or requiring women to wear burkas. So, assimilation is a thing. Yes, we take from immigrants as well, but let's not fail to integrate them into the culture. Which, of course, will change over time, regardless.
(I was born in a time when America had had a sort of moratorium on immigration for some 50 years.)

I enjoy having the "brown" ie Indian or West Asian people in my neighborhood. They're quiet and polite and stay out of everyone's business. They open successful running companies and help clean up the place. They also cook excellent food. They also a surprisingly diverse bunch, and generally not always the same way every time. I'd rather have them any day over the ghetto blacks or low-rent Latins we've often had for neighbors.

We have changed from almost all white to a lot of Asian and Indian and Hispanics. The number of blacks has increased as well.

My dentist's wife made me a chicken dish with quince, plums, and apricots, along with saffron rice. They work 6 days a week running two practices.

There's a low income apartment building on my street. All Messicans. They are Americanized. No shit cars parked on the street, no unleashed dogs, no litter. Working poor but great neighbors. I'm working with a new neighbor to put together our first ever block party. The food will be outstanding for sure.

And the larger city to the south has thrown in the towel. In some neighborhoods cars parked on the front lawns because there's no more parking. 10 to a 2-bedroom house. Trash everywhere. And some poor retiree with a perfect yard, sandwiched in between the results of a government that looks the other way for cheap labor.
