Tricare is essentially a very slightly beefed up medicaid. Most military folks think it's terrific because that's what they are told but the payouts to doctors is VERY low and many highly rated doctors refuse to take it. My wife did billing for DR offices and the only one's that accepted it were really shitty doctors or if they had some sort of relationship with the patient. A friend who is a pediatrician accepted tricare patients when he first graduated - after a few years he dropped it as he didn't need the cut rate business.

Interesting. My Mom has Tricare Prime. It is widely excepted here in San Diego, maybe because there is just so many retired military.

It's still insurance so a place like San Diego isn't going to be a problem (I'm guessing they have a very substantial VA system). My wife's cousin is retired Army and lives about 20 minutes from Ft Wood in Missouri - he can get most stuff at the base but anything substantial he has to drive. Rolla is a town of about 20k very close to the base and he said nobody will take the insurance so they have to drive 1.5 hours to St Louis to get anything the base can't cover. He has PTSD and all four of his kids are on the spectrum so all therapists are in St Louis. He was shocked after being told for all those years how great the insurance is to find out it sucks.

My brother in law is "disabled" from the Marines for his hearing. It's not tricare but it took him over 2 years to get hearing aids and a replacement took 6 months.

I would guess that when people talk about how great it is, they are referring to the insured person's perspective. When my mom had a knee replacement, her out of pocket expense was less than $100.

Medicaid would very likely have the exact same fee.

Perhaps, but likely with a less desirable doctor, hospital, health group etc.

That was my original point. Tricare and Medicaid have exceptionally similar payouts to providers so their providers are limited to those desperate for patients or if there is a requirement by their group to take some on. In San Diego the doctors may have to take on all because of the massive military presence and the PR hit of turning away veterans. That's not the case in most of the country. That's why my wife's cousin has to drive long distances to find providers who will take their insurance.

I don’t want to feel it. I’d imagine it’s supposed to be pretty painful and I’m lucky the nerves got severed.
