So, I was just curious. July 1 is Canada Day. Was that the official day you declared yourselves no longer British subjects but a Commonwealth? 1860-70's?

Isn't a commonwealth still technically English property? I'm seriously asking.

Canada is an independent country and is not "owned" by England.

We know that. Isn't July 1 the day you declared Commonwealth status instead of being British subjects? Only question I'm trying to ask.

July 1 1867 the Dominion of Canada came into being.

1982 is when the British government no longer had any authority here.

Among other people. We have 5 or 6 Canadian Prime Ministers on our paper money as well. The Queen is only on the $20 dollar bill.
The Royals are figureheads and nothing more. An homage to the past.
Look at it like this... replace the word "commonwealth" with "international association".

So they are kinda loosely related to the independent country of Canada. As part of the deal you pay homage to the family by putting her face on 20's? If I were you, I'd play up thew English connection whenever the frog wannabes in Kaaabek start acting out.

Thanks. Actually a smart move at the time. Australia, NZ, S Africa all did the same. Amazing what having a Navy dominate the world's oceans does to your nations's strategic thinking.

I've been reading some interesting books about (aboot?) Canada's political system and history, and how young Canadians regard it. When they do. Canada's governmental system is a constitutional monarchy, and *not* a democratic republic like in the USA. And it seems that's a fact not always properly taught in Canada's schools. So many young Canadians are steeped in America's ideals and practices that many have forgotten it's not the Canadian system. At all. And Canadian schools often shortchange the major differences between the Canadian and American systems, so many young Canadians have little real idea how their own political and governmental system works. Canada's history is utterly fascinating, and might have been ours had certain key events happened with a subtlety different outcome.

I'll leave it to the folks in Pol/SFW to argue whether that would have been a good thing or a bad thing... ;)
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

One major philosophical difference between Americans and Canadians is that 'Mericans dwell and over-pimp their past.

We are more excited about our future. We look forward, not back.
