I highly doubt they will compete with the traditional gas models for at least a quarter century. Obviously the future trend. Since they are being advertised as the new tech replacing the old, would be interesting to see a study on how much they actually replace the petroleum source. I mean, you have to hook it up to a power source to recharge supplied from the plants powered by oil/ gas, etc.AnalHamster wrote: ↑Sat Jun 15, 2019 9:56 am They have great tech, when they go tits up and it gets bought by a real car company it'll be the future of motoring. Musk is just incompetent as the CEO of a car manufacturing company, and doesn't seem to have the sense to hire one. Or at least poach a few of the old boys from ford or somewhere and get them to help set up the practical side. Drive and vision is great for the big picture stuff, but for actually making a car what you want is some grizzled old fart who's been doing it for decades. Things like assembly, sales and logistics didn't need a revolutionary approach like the drive technology did, they needed the tried and tested and improved over decades approach that all the other car makers have.

Re: Tesla
Electric cars are limited by their batteries and current tech relies heavily on the Li-Ion battery, while it charges and does better than lead acid batteries the Lithium itself is the problem. They cannot safely be recycled at this time and can cause fires long after they have been taken out if service.
A lot of yards cannot touch these vehicles because they have to be demanned in a specific way and they also pose a safety hazard to first responders.

Re: Tesla
About 2 weeks ago I was working on a renovation at this old guy's house. He had a Tesla model S in the garage. I asked him how he liked the car. He said he loved it. It was his 3rd one. He had originally owned one when he lived in Washington State. Tesla wouldn't allow him to bring it across the line, or they wouldn't continue to update it. He sold it. When he moved back up here he bought a Model X. He wasn't a fan of the gull wing doors. So when he was in getting it serviced he saw the Model S. He swapped the Model X plus like $20,000, and got the Model S. He said he loved all of the Tesla's he's owned. He liked the thought of being able to drive passed gas stations, and not having to worry about the price. He liked the range, which is around 350 miles, or something. And he liked the performance. So from the one Tesla owner I've talked to, I would have to say they sound like good cars.

They don't say in the article if the same standard of calculating overall CO2 emissions is applied to diesels as well as all electric vehicles.peterosehaircut wrote: ↑Sat Jun 15, 2019 9:50 pm I'll just leave this here.

I'm going to suggest that when all is said and done the CO2 emissions involved with the production of cars (extraction of resources, etc..) is a relative wash. And there is no doubt that the use of electricity, as opposed to any internal combustion type engine, is far more efficient from an energy consumption standpoint.

Agreed with your last sentence. Instant power, little to no loss in the transmission of said power, and regenerative braking all increase the efficiency. Last I read though, battery pack disposal was still an issue.Zerohedge wrote:German researchers criticized the fact that EU legislation classifies electric cars as zero-emission cars; they call it a deception because electric cars, like the Model 3, with all the factors, included, produce more emissions than diesel vehicles by Mercedes.
Re: Tesla
So, it sounds like the zero emission claim is false. Hell, automakers have gotten the emissions on gas models down to a fraction of what they were just 2 decades ago. Still leaves a big 2 question. kwebber mentioned about the 3 time Tesla owner and how he laughs passing gas stations because he doesn't have to worry about the price. So, for comparison, say a gas car has a 20 gallon tank. 20 X $3 per gallon = $60. Range until refuel at 25MPG = 500 miles. Total refuel time- minutes. I'll throw out how much more the Tesla's cost. Obviously, that will come way down in the next couple of decades. I am totally uninformed on the recharge facilities. Sure not free. My assumption is a 20-30 minute recharge time but I have no idea how much they charge to get you 350 miles down the road. Anybody know? And the final fantasy- owners smug that they've broken their dependency of petroleum when in fact when they are sitting there recharging their cars using the juice from a power plant hundreds of miles away burning through a thousand tons of oil/ natural gas per day. I would love to see actual usage of petroleum between the two.
