Drug addicts and alcoholics

#1

Post by beagleboy »

How many do you have in your family?

My mom's cousin was a bi-polar alcoholic who battled it his entire adult life (just died) and his son is in jail right now - also bi-polar but a drug addict (heroin is his current drug of choice I think).

My wife's grandfather was an alcoholic (supposedly) and several of her cousins are borderline. I'm not really believing any of them actually are alcoholics.

As far as I can tell - not a single DUI in the bunch.

This cousin's son who does heroin has been arrested about a dozen times for different stuff like stealing. He would steal stuff and then sell it on Facebook because why wouldn't you do that?

Alcoholic grandfather died of cirrhosis.
My Aunt battles cancer on and off for 20 years and is addicted to pills.
Her son, my cousin OD'd on crack. Got hooked stealing mom's pills in the beginning.

On my wife's side:
Her grandmother was an alcoholic til the end, asking us to bring booze into the hospital room.
Her brother has 4 kids, 3 hooked on heroin. All 3 in and out of rehab. The boy got hooked on pills at 13 from a car accident. The other 2 are just losers. All 3 steal from family, one girl hooks (she is fucking hot, too) and the other lives with her junkie boyfriend.
The brother's girlfriend is also an alcoholic.
Her ex-mother-in-law is hooked on pain pills and cough medicine. No shit, has a bottle on her at all times.

I am addicted to spreading peace and love. If you don't believe me, then you can fuck off and die, you rotten cunt! In peace, of course :D

Alcohol is the choice in my family. We have to watch it. I'm probably an "alcoholic" but then I don't drink to excess all night every night. Actually it's fairly rare that I do. But I will have a few drinks in the evening after work. Some people drink pop, I drink beer, or a couple of whiskeys on the rocks, or a couple vodkas. I'll go through a fifth and a half with a couple of beers in the course of the week.

Yeah, pretty much this for every male and female ancestor over the last 2,000 years. No big deal. Doesn't affect anything next day.

I've never done heroin. I'm pretty sure if I did I would very quickly be living on the streets of San Fran shitting in a bucket.

The established metric for alcoholism for women is 7 drinks per week and 14 drinks per week for men.

That makes just about everyone I know an alcoholic.

(except for my wife. I doubt she's had 7 drinks in the last 20 years. MORE FOR ME!)

I like my doctor. We had the alcohol conversation the other day and when he asked exactly how much liquor I consume, his rather non-judgemental response was "that's impressive."

Bingo, What drugs have you experimented with? All mine were back in college days. The list is pretty long- making sure I did not do anything stupid (Addiction). Of course pot, cocaine . Heavy shit - LSD, psilocybin. Holy shit. Most intense experiences of my life.

14 drinks? Does it specify the size of the drinks? I mean if there's no size limit I'll just start drinking directly from the bottle. I could them say I never finish my full drink in a night.

Alcoholics on both sides, not in the immediate family. A couple died of alcoholism. Lots of drug abuse, though I wouldn’t say addicts. I dabbled, myself.

Does nicotine count? A carton of cigs in our family house might only last a couple days, everyone in the family smoked. Like fucking chimneys, puff Puff PUFF. When I turned 26 I quit cold-turkey and haven't smoke a single cigarette since. Now I'm anti-tobacco. Don't light up around me, I don't tolerate it.

Other than that, no. My family never really hit the bottle much at all. Dad had a beer or two a week at best, Mom didn't touch the stuff. The rest of us are all very light drinkers. *But* my biker brother did his share of pot most of his life, and I had an acid habit in high school.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

The metric of 7 drinks for women per week and 14 for men isn't that you are an alcoholic but that you are at increased risk of becoming one.

Friend manages gas station convenience stores and said that within a week you know all the alcoholics who visit. They buy at least 1 bottle or a 12 pack of beer darn near every morning and are very friendly to the counter people.

A friend's ex-bro in law used to drink at least a 12 pack every day. He'd start at 3pm and would pass out by 8:30-9pm 7 days a week. He was a tiny little guy probably 140 lbs. I went to one of their family parties where he sat in his car alone drinking beer instead of coming into the house.

My parents were major smokers. My mom had a small heart attack in 2001 and quit cold turkey right there. My dad had a massive 9 out of 10 ranked heart attack around 2004 and never smoked again. When they moved into a condo my mom was heartbroken to find out everything she had stored in the basement smelled of their cigarettes.

Funny how it works. If a stockbroker has 2 martinis at lunch, he is OK, but if a landscaper drinks a 40 at lunch, he is a bum. The stockbroker might have 2 more after work with his g/f before he goes home to his wife. The landscaper might go pick up his kids after school and not have another drink. Most see the guy with a bigger wallet as the successful one.

My whole family was: Mom and Dad, and all their extended families down to 1st cousins. *Everybody!* I've always kidded that since the house always reeked of cigarette smoke, and my mom lit up a cancer stick the minute after I was born, I've always been a smoker. I have no memory of the first time I actually stuck a butt in my piehole and took a lit match to it. My dad's older brother, who's 96, still smokes a a cig once or twice a day, just can't quit. My dad only quit a few years before he died from asbestos, which is what gave him lung cancer. He finally figured sticking a cig into his throat hole wasn't good business.

My brother in law smokes outside. His dad died of lung cancer and yet he still won't quit.
I have a co-worker who smokes.
In my entire extended family I know 2 smokers - even the heroin cousin doesn't smoke.

I don't know anyone else who smokes. Asked all my nephews and nieces and none of their friends smoke. My wife has a family reunion where about 80 people show up for 2 days every year - not a single smoker. Had a friends get together last fall with about 50 adults - not a single smoker. It's pretty amazing how that's changed.

In college, I'd make that in any given day.

Far as I know, I didn't become an alcoholic.
