Living out in W Texas, there are just huge amounts of buzzards that take care of the road kills (except Winter- no matter what DT says). The one thing we wished they could do (like hawks and such) is use their feet to drag or fly away with their kills. Other than tiny critters they can fly away in their beaks, they are stuck feeding either on the roads or right beside them. You are always having to watch carefully that they don't smash into your windshield as you drive up. Slow taker offers.

Yeah, I see them around here during the Winter. BUT Again, I'm talking about far W Texas. They scedadle during the Winter out there. Probably the first sign of Spring each year is them migrating back in huge numbers

Still tons of road kills during the Winter. I thinks it's probably temperature with one huge additional factor. Some small areas (like around Iraan) are kinda semi-mountainous which can provide shelter but most is flat as a board which offers no shelter at all.
