Explain to me the Mob Families in the US
Everyone probably heard on the news last week about the crime boss of the Gambino crime family in NY getting murdered in front of his house. I think he was the guy that took John Gotti's job.
Anyway, my question is that during the news report they mentioned that there were 5 crime families in NY. If you google the subject there is tons of information on them. Not just in New York, but Chicago and other cities.
Now, I get that 100 years ago, law enforcement was somewhat limited in its abilities, but how is this allowed to continue in today's times? It just seems so bizarre to me.

Rico has really hurt them. At the same time, we've got Russian gangs to contend with, now. And MS-13.

I met John Gotti as a kid, The Russians really have stepped into the void left by cosa nostra But the Russians do not like the spotlight like the Teflon Don did.

I thought John Gotti was a lot older than him. Unless of course he meant "as a kid, I met...."

The guy was famous, he was on the tv news every single night He just wacked the boss of his own crime family. It wasn't a parade, it was an illegal fireworks display set up by John

I celebrated cinco de mayo with El Chapo and Che Guevara back in the 80s.. i think Julio Iglesias was a pretty regular guest as well and provided excellent entertainment.CaptQuint wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 4:43 pmI absolutely did, on the fourth of July in South Ozone Park, Queens.

Gotti was no shrinking violet. His visibility led to his downfall. After one court victory he scheduled a huge fireworks display. Where he lost me is in killing the guy who accidentally ran over his kid.

does no one get the point though? you were a kid at a fireworks show and you know who the head of the crime family is.
the minute this guy last week is killed every news source knew that he was a crime boss and where he lived.

I guess I am missing your point, My Father introduced him to me, he said Mr Gotti this is my son and I shook his hand and he asked me if I was excited for the fireworks and I said I was. Then he said to my dad you have a fine boy there. Then he moved off to the next group of people. Imagine a political candidate working a room. The man was a vicious criminal but the people loved him. In that time and place people would be more excited to meet John then President Reagan.Flumper wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 6:20 pmdoes no one get the point though? you were a kid at a fireworks show and you know who the head of the crime family is.

it just occurs to me that "crime boss" signifies that crimes are involved. i'm no federal investigator, but that seems like a pretty simple one to solve.CaptQuint wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 6:54 pm

Re: Explain to me the Mob Families in the US
The head of the crime family does not go out and commit the crimes himself. He has soldiers to do the dirty work. The head of the family insulates himself from arrest and prosecution. That's why The FBI spent considerable money and effort in having organized crime task forces and needed to wiretap and get people to rat on other mafia members. John had a huge ego and loved the spotlight and that and the fact people started ratting on him led to government taking him downFlumper wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 7:05 pmit just occurs to me that "crime boss" signifies that crimes are involved. i'm no federal investigator, but that seems like a pretty simple one to solve.CaptQuint wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 6:54 pm

My family had heavy ties to the mob back in the 40's. My Dads dad and his brother were all Diamond dealers in Chicago. I have pictures of my Grandfather with Al Capone. It was the main reason they moved to Ca, to get away from those types.

My Father was not a stable man, in fact when I got home that night I told my mom that I met Gotti and my mom was pissed as my dad told her we were going to manhattan to watch Macy's fireworks display. We ended up hanging out in a bar across from aqueduct racetrack.

And Al Capone was imprisoned for tax evasion, not being the head of a crime family

That mob shit has been going in NJ way before prohibition. Remember reading a book a few years ago- it was about instances of nuclear accidents at power plants, test sites, laboratories, etc. Had one that happened in the late 60's at a power plant somewhere (don't remember) kinda minor. They bought it on the cheap years earlier from a guy who had invested in it to operate out of NJ. Guy gave it up. Too much of a hassle dealing with the Mob in it's construction. Labor stoppage, parts and labor inflation, the usual mob dealings.

GD pisses me off. Go into change one word or misspell and hit the quote button instead of the edit one. Oh well, it's readable.JackRabbit_Slim wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 9:23 pmBack to quoting yourself?WestTexasCrude wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 9:21 pmWestTexasCrude wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 9:21 pm That mob shit has been going on in NJ way before prohibition.
