1 gig internet--anyone have it?
I've read that they use fiber in the street but drop it down to coaxial cable running to house. Doesn't that create a huge bottle neck and screw up the speeds? What say you?

Re: 1 gig internet--anyone have it?
That's exactly what happens. Coax can't handle the bandwidth that fiber does. To get the most out of it you need fiber all the way to your modem.8-TrackJones wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 2:39 pm I've read that they use fiber in the street but drop it down to coaxial cable running to house. Re: 1 gig internet--anyone have it?
A decade ago, we wrote about how Verizon had made an agreement in Pennsylvania in 1994 that it would wire up the state with fiber optic cables to every home in exchange for tax breaks equalling $2.1 billion. In exchange for such a massive tax break, Verizon promised that all homes and businesses would have access to 45Mbps symmetrical fiber by 2015. By 2004, the deal was that 50% of all homes were supposed to have that. In reality, 0% did, and some people started asking for their money back. That never happened, and it appeared that Verizon learned a valuable lesson: it can flat out lie to governments, promise 100% fiber coverage in exchange for subsidies, then not deliver, and no one will do a damn thing about it.

Yes, they are. Mostly thanks to digital compression technology. (and it sounds really good in the sales pitch) But make no mistake, coax equals signal loss.BigRedRetard wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 2:51 pm Just did a quick search. They are pushing 1 Gbps over copper.
Up here in Canada all new housing and apartment buildings are now being pre-wired with fiber instead of coax.

Yup. You don't need fiber going into your house, just a clean signal.BigRedRetard wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 2:51 pm Just did a quick search. They are pushing 1 Gbps over copper.

Re: 1 gig internet--anyone have it?
I was a FiOS installer in new jersey. Fiber is provisioned to the home where it terminates into an ONT (optical network terminal) where the digital signal is converted to analog for phone, rf for tv/video, internet WAN is provided via ethernet over Cat-6 wire homerun to router location. Internet to television boxs for guide and info is sent over the houses coax cables via what is called a MoCA signal so a coaxial cable has to be run back to the main splitter from the router. This is a Verizon product.
AT&T (U-Verse) tried to cut cost and ran fiber to a hub and then sent out their signal over the existing phone cables like a DSL signal on steroids. I don't think it's as good of a product.

Cleaner meaning no ingress in the line. You can get fiber speeds over cable with the right modem, but the tech is still new and finicky so it typically needs new lines to reach full speed.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 3:50 pmThat's an old wives tale.Geist wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 2:59 pmYup. I know what "clean" means. No damage, ingress or egress.Geist wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 3:55 pmCleaner meaning no ingress in the line.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 3:50 pmThat's an old wives tale.Geist wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 2:59 pmYup. What about signal loss over distance? What about the diameter of the copper? Are you suggesting that copper is as "clean" as fiber?

No, it's not as good and signal attenuation is definitely greater. But it makes a viable conductor until companies start shelling out for full structural overhaul.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 4:01 pmI know what "clean" means. Canadian cable companies started shelling out for full structural overhaul about 10 years ago and have gone nuts with it over the last 5 years. 10 years from now coaxial distribution will no longer exist in major and most medium sized population areas.

Good on Canada. Fiber is fought at every turn down here, and companies have gone so far as to embezzle billions in tax dollars that were handed to them for such and upgrade.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 4:13 pmAgreed.Geist wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 4:05 pmNo, it's not as good and signal attenuation is definitely greater. Re: 1 gig internet--anyone have it?
They are right in the middle of wiring up my whole town for fiber, but it's not cheap.
And the 1 gig thing is the "advertised" speed. Nobody will ever get that much.
Back in the 90's I had the first highspeed modem that Bell put out, the Westell. Billed as 2.2mb down and 1mb up. Best I could do was about 800kb because of my distance to the CO.

Hell, at least over fiber, you know you are afforded some privacy. Can you imagine the hackability (sp) of bouncing your internet off satellites. No thanks.megman wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 8:35 pmYes/no.Reservoir Dog wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 8:33 pmGet satellite internet.
