I always had a deep love for his and Mike's ballads like "Surfer Girl" and "In My Room". Brian had a great ear for chord progressions.

He might have had a good ear on one side, but the other side was almost completely deaf. Various stories about what caused the deafness in that ear as a child. Either his father hit him multiple times in that ear or a neighbor kid hit him with a baseball bat. Regardless, he could only hear out of one ear, which is why his band continued to record albums in mono, even after stereo became the norm in the 60's. Pet Sounds was recorded in mono, which was very odd at the time. He couldn't hear in stereo.

Yea, I knew about that, and there have been multiple stories as to why. But it probably was his abusive father.
My brother Mike was born deaf in his left ear, he managed almost two months in the Army before it was discovered by his drill sergeant, who noticed my brother didn't flinch during grenade training. His DS suspected it before, but that training clinched it, and it disqualified him from further service. Mike was given an honorable under medical circumstances, but no other benefits. It was a shame, Mike was using it to keep his life from going to shit like it did later.
