Well, it never gets any easier... pt 2
My wife's beloved cocker crossed the ol' rainbow bridge yesterday. Sadie was not quite 12 years old, we actually don't know how old she was. Almost 12 is just the number of years my wife had her. I first found her at a nearby property barking her head off, and she wouldn't let me get anywhere near her, so I just left her for my wife to find later that day when she got home. And when I came home, there's this fat little bear of a dog that immediately came over and slobbered on my hand. We weren't sure about keeping her, we already had two dogs then, along an unmentionable number of cats. We tried to find her owner, and since we live behind a vet's office, went there to ask. Yea, they knew about her, someone had brought her in early, but didn't fill out their contact info, so the office had no idea. Anyone who lives near or works for a vet's office will know about abandoned pets. No one claimed her, so now we had a third dog to care for in our tiny ramshackle house. The wife named her Sadie, and while not a "pretty" example of a cocker spaniel, she sure had the cocker attitude. Loved to chase balls, willful at the worst times, and totally devoted to her mama. Wherever my wife went, Sadie was right under her feet.
In the last several years, Sadie developed joint problems and an enlarged heart. We believe she was also mostly blind, and likely deaf. Sadie couldn't walk as much and so got fat, fatter than she already was, and we couldn't exercise her. The low fat "diet" food left her hungry, and she loved to nuzzle thru the litter box for "treats". She was single minded like a cocker, so barriers rarely stopped her. But Sadie was the very definition of a "good dog" in almost every way. Despite being a cat lover, I still strongly believe we humans don't deserve the love we get from dogs. If you have a dog that loves you, you have something of an immeasurable value better than anything else you can have in life, the greatest possession of all. A dog's love is that and more.
She also in the last year developed a problem with fluid in her lungs, she began to have real problems breathing. Her breaths had a harsh gasping sound. Our regular vet suggested taking her to an emergency vet for consultation, and after some tearful words, had to make the decision. Not based on economics, but on the medicine. We might have put her on a course of drugs, she was already taking five for her heart and joints, so what's another one or two. But how much longer would that kept her with us, a year at best? Only to see her suffer more in that time? As much as neither of us wanted to, we knew it was time. A quick couple of shots and it was over. Now I had an inconsolable wife and a hefty bill to pay. But we both also have memories of possibly the best dog either of us has known, something to keep near our hearts to our own death.
So..., how was your Saturday?

If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

Sorry, QD. Dogs are the best.

Sometimes we tend to keep things, pets, people, around for our own satisfaction, not thinking about them.
This is strictly my opinion and you can take it for what it's worth.
And I feel you QD.

We ended up with a dog (and cat) during the pandemic that was most likely abandoned. Putting them down is never easy but it will get better and you will only remember the good times soon. Sounds like the dog was lucky it found you. Sorry for your loss.

It's funny, while I was writing that little blurb, at the point I mentioned Sadie's five pills she had to take during the day, I thought about your signature. The wife would make a fist-sized ball of dog food (expensive stuff), hide the pills in it, and still the dog would spit out some/all of them. It was a real mess almost every day getting pills down her damn face. I often kidded we should just hide the pills in cat poop, since she ate that so freely.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.

This is Mosley. The greatest dog in the history of dogs!
She was 14 years old when I had her put down back in 2015. It almost destroyed me doing it.
But I didn't think about myself. I thought about what was best for my dog and the suffering she would go through if I was selfish and prolonged her life.
As a pet owner, sometimes you have to make the hard call. But it sucks.

Cat poop, lol
I am sorry for your loss, I too like our pups more than almost all people.
I guess I have had to put 3 dogs down over the years, each time is as painful as the last.

I have resisted my wife's wish to get another dog because I don't want to deal with what comes in 12 to 15 years. Putting our last dog down was really rough.

Sorry to hear it QD. Nothing like the furry family members.
