It says in the article why. He essentially paid a $10k fine.


“After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case,” the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office stated in an email.

There usually three sides to every case: the cops' side of the story, the defendent's side, and the actual truth. Something must of come up in the investigation that really softens the case the cops have against Jussie, maybe to the point they don't really have a case. Sad that it's sealed, though, the details of the investigation might have been really interesting.

When even Chicago politicians complain about something be fucked up, you may want to take a closer look at a situation.

Don't understand how you "volunteer" to pay 10k to the city and "volunteer" community service for a crime you adamantly protest that you didn't commit. His only hope of redemption was to admit his guilt, blame it on the pressure of being both black and gay in our oppressive American society, and see if he could get Streisand to agree to put out a single with him labeled "Dems was just Jokes".

And there I believe you have your answer. Sent a threatening letter to himself through the mail. Federal offence. Remember a couple of years ago, when that 5 time deported illegal alien went on trial (City or State, I don't remember) for opened fire on a San Francisco pier and killed that American mother of 3. Jury acquitted him, lawyers slapped him on the back and the judge said "you are free to go". I would have expected a no jail time plea deal, since he'd likely have got the same at trial anyway. Letting him off without an admission of guilt though is very odd, something fishy there.

If he had just gone away it would have been over. Instead he and his attorney poked the bear.

I doubt they collect - they dropped the charges on his filing a false police report.

I expect he'll settle the civil case with a non disclosure agreement as part of the settlement.

You got a serious crime that is getting a slap on the wrist and the details concealed... the Chicago PD gets a much needed 'gentler look', the actor gets a bunch of publicity that will lead to more work and more pay for his handlers, errr... agent. Seems like a win-win, and very plausible.

Why do you think there is a 99.9% chance that well-connected people aren't working with one another for common goals?

Because they're working against each other in very public ways, including suing the dumbass, and anyone involved would be committing serious federal-pound-me-in-the-ass-prison level crimes risking their freedom and pensions, and it would be a conspiracy involving many people which hasn't leaked (that's where literally all conspiracy theories fall down), and the scheme was so transparent and stupid that it simply can't have been planned in advance by people competent enough to reach high levels of civil service. If there is a network of conspiracists stupid enough to have planned this crime, they are too stupid to now successfully cover it up.
