Yesterday, while eating my corned beef and cabbage, I was wondering about prison food.
Did they get corned beef and cabbage yesterday? Ham and roast beast on Christmas? Turkey on thanksgiving? Black eyed peas on New Year’s Day?
I’d like to think so.

I used to work as an IT vendor for the state prisons around central Florida, and often needed to enter prisons all around the state, including Raiford where we juice the condemned. As a vendor I was permitted access to the commissary, and for a buck cash, could get a plate (with free seconds) of the "food of the day" offered to both the prisoners and staff. I did that once.
Once! The warden completely understood, and it was why the guards and other staff brought their own lunches and dinners. It was just terrible.
As far as I know, at least in Florida they don't serve any specials dinners other than for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some prisoners, if they can show the need, can get special plates. Halal for Muslims, vegetarian if approved by the medical staff, etc. But even those plates leave a lot to be thankful for.

Place I worked did. And it wasn't terrible. People complained about it but it was on par with cafeteria food from K12.
