Things Young People Should Know..

So much is being lost as oldies die off. Remember when your parents said “ice box”?
Sure you do.
I just texted my 3 sons the wiki page for iceboxes. They probably already know.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icebox
I also told them where the term “Sour Grapes” comes from. I’m sure they were raised without the fables we knew as kids.

I was at a flea/antique market yesterday, and something equally trivial occurred to me to tell the little shits. I’ve forgotten it now, but it seemed very important at the time.

Do you have any suggestions? I’m blowing up their phones with messages. It’s how we stay connected.

Teach them how to dial a rotary phone, sharpen a knife correctly, and change a tire.

Yes. Don’t know if they could change a tire.

1. How to think for themselves.

2. How to handle their finances.

3. How to cook ( at least one good meal)

4. The previously mentioned change a tire.

5. How to sew (at least enough to mend a seam)

Yeah, it’s not the same anymore. you Have to practically disassemble to front end to replace some headlights.

Is this all cars now or just the ones slanty people make? FP's car is not as bad but you still gotta take out the battery to get to it.

2. How to handle their finances.
This is a MAJOR determining factor of financial success. As an example African Americans who hit the middle class are generally completely ill prepared because their parents never taught or showed them quality financial planning as they grew up. It's not their fault, it just isn't taught to them or passed down from generations. I see the same thing a lot in poor white families.

On the other hand most Germans have it taught within the community and you can see it as part of the economy in German and in the Midwest. Save every paycheck regardless of how small it is. If you can't pay cash, you can't afford it. Never pay interest - have it paid to you. CLEAN everything. When I was in high school my dad set up an IRA and deposited a small amount in it for me and told me to invest in it every month. I've literally never had a car payment in my life except when Mazda paid me to have one for 4 months.

Germany has the lowest usage of credit cards of all developed countries because people are taught it is a negative.

I still call it the "ice box". My wife, older than me but from the mid-West, makes fun of me for it since it's apparently never called that in Iowa.

I had to do that recently enough with my wife's 2003 Lexus RX300. Still a mess of hoses to push out of the way, too.

Wife's Suburban is hard to get to. You have to google for directions. Note: might be talking about running lights.

I had young people in the forming dept. when I worked Precision Metal Fabrication that could not read a single or double dial vernier. Had to be a digital.

I use to use a plate vernier and micrometer knowing that no one would ask to use them.

And I can still use a slide rule.

True story.
I was in a Burger King and their cash registers were down. They were taking orders with pens and paper. My order came to $9.65. I gave the cashier a $10.00 bill. She had a panicked look on her face and was just holding her pen above the paper. There was a lineup behind me and I didn't want to embarrass her so I leaned forward and quietly whispered "35 cents". Her shoulders dropped and she whispered back "Thank you".
Later, I found myself wondering how much money that Burger King lost that day. Because I can guarantee you that not a single one of those orders had the tax calculated into them.

Lessons from old fables.

Here's one that I use and advise all the time: 7 years of feast, seven years of famine.

Our current community board is trying their damndest to spend money accumulated by wiser leadership. Eventually, they will succeed, and then dues will go up, because there will almost certainly be some unforeseen crisis. But that money's just burning a hole in their pockets.

Had to do that for my daughter's Pontiac, it wasn't that hard. Pop the retaining pins on the nose, pull it out, remove the bolts on the head lamp housing and work it free. I had them done in a few minutes.

I stay the hell away from credit cards myself and have a running budget spreadsheet with projected and actual income and expenses. Only way I made it through when the alimony was at its highest levels. Now it's just a habit.

Want to really see panic set in on their faces...…….Example: Go to register and they ring up Item for .76 cents....you have your dollar out so they punch in one dollar that shows .24 cents back...….Say hold on a second...here is a penny so you can hand me back a quarter.

"WTF are you giving me that for? That's too much"
So you can give me a quarter back.
"I don't understand what your trying to do Sir"
