I looked up a friend today to call him and see how he's doing and the first listing in Google is his obituary, he died in November.

He was a good man, very good lawyer. We worked a lot of cases together, took time to bullshit together, occasional lunches and drinks. I liked the guy and am shocked that he is dead.

I am stunned.

I have call display on my phone. Everyone does. Whenever someone I haven't talked to in a long time calls me I always answer, "Who died?"

The last time this happened (back in September) it was my buddy's wife calling to tell me that he had died.

I don't do that any more.

So I guess the record player is already gone.

About a year after I got out of the Corps I checked the casualty list from Iraq to make sure I didn't know anyone and I wanted to check the KIA date of an EOD tech that I knew. Found out that a kid that I had in my platoon as a boot in Japan had been killed by an IED on my birthday. Was a good kid, a bit goofy. I think he was 20, maybe 21.

How did he die? I hope he had time to prepare his shit, and go without pain.

Lost my brother in law to cancer recently. 57 y/o. He had time to prepare, but I always wished he rented a fast car, went on a long road trip and when it was time, rented a few hookers, got a pile of coke (he did that back in the 80's) and had one last party. Pick a way to go: 150 mph off a cliff into the ocean, massive gun battle after robbing a bank, coke off hookers tits until head explodes, barrel off Niagara Falls... Instead he slowly passed in a hospice home, with a bunch of family crying around him. Once he was diagnosed as terminal, my only wish was he could put a short bucket list together before he got too sick, and have some fun.
