Here's a fact that makes no sense

I was reading and came across a fact that seems to not make any sense.

There are more possible iterations of a game of chess than there are atoms in the known universe.

So, the number of possible "iterations" of a game of chess is called the Shannon Number. There's a wikipedia page. Its appx 1 x 10^120. Now, of course this includes stupid moves like moving a queen into position to be captured by a pawn, but none the less, its every possible move.

But more than "atoms in the universe"?

A single grain of sand has about 3.31 x 10^20 atoms. I'd have to call bullshit on this fact.

The problem with exponential increases is they get really hard to imagine really quick.

Another interesting fact, which appears to be true, is that Wooly Mammoths were alive on the earth at the time that the Great Pyramids of Giza were built.

The pyramids were built around 2500 bc. The mammoths were alive and kicking on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Sea until around 2000 bc. 500 years after the pyramids were built.

Yeah, that doesnt seem to make sense, considering one universe is finite while the other is clearly not
Well, they did say atoms in the "known" universe.

Some of them were even UJ goddesses.

It doesn't make sense to you because you can't conceive of the numbers. It's like quantum mechanics or relativity, the scales aren't what the brain is optimised for so it doesn't seem intuitively right. That's what maths is for, it not only makes sense but you can prove it to be true.

Here's another thing to think about.

Did you know that if you properly shuffle a deck of cards, that it is almost a certainty that no one has ever, nor will anyone ever in the future, come up with the same sorting of the cards?

At this level, it is estimated that the there are between 10 ^78 to 10 ^82 atoms in the known, observable universe. In layman’s terms, that works out to between ten quadrillion vigintillion and one-hundred thousand quadrillion vigintillion atoms.

Fun fact, it is estimated that if you multiply this number by itself, you get roughly how many Adams have been inside FSF's wife. That's not even including Steves or Pauls.

Oh wow. There goes another got bucket liar and fruitcake that is jealous of me and my awesome relationship with my wife.

How is being a prison guard going for you Geist? Are you gratified by that type of job. Whatever, I heard it pays well, also has the highest suicide of any law enforcement position.

Nah boy, you're fucking fngrpnt, one of the biggest whores on the planet. On the other hand my wife doesn't indulge in those whorist type of activities, unless it's for me.

Man, one "fact" (Carl Sagan?) that I always hated was the "There are more Stars in in the Universe than all the sand on all the beaches on Earth". WTH does that even mean? Finally read a few years ago someone finally state the "fact". Get you hands on a lot of extremely fine construction sand. Fill up a normal spoon- that's the number of stars visible (10,000) on the darkest night. Throw that spoonful into a wheelbarrow and fill it to the top with sand. That's the number of stars (100-150 billion) in the Milky Way Galaxy. Now take that wheelbarrow of sand and dump it into one of those huge sand trailers that railroads haul. Fill it to the rim. Now start the railroad up and have one of those trailers pass by one every second. Totaling the number of stars in the entire Universe, The last trailer would pass by after 6.3 years.

One that blew me away recently, and I will probably have to google to get the facts right. One of those Nasa probes, Voyager 2, they sent out to survey all the planets in our solar system left our solar system a few years ago. They said the speed it was going, 35,000 mph. They said at that speed that the next planet that it would approach would be in 20,000 years (or some insane number of years).

Voyager 2 is heading for Sirius, it won't get there for 300,000 years. Voyager 1 is heading for a closer star it'll reach in about 40,000 years. Both probes will be effectively dead in 20 years though. These things were built in the 70s, the technology is less advanced than a flip phone.

You have your facts correct- no need to Google. That 20,000 years is just to get to Alpha Centauri A and B (binary star system) is only 4 light years away. A stone throw away from us. Just to penetrate our "arm" of the Milky Way at those speeds will take 100's of Millions of years.

Think about this. Voyager 1 and 2 are probably traveling as fast as our technology allows right now. A fraction of a fraction of a fraction of Light Speed. Even if you could travel at light speed, to get across the Milky Way galaxy would take you 300,000 years.

I use to have a CFC rating (Canadian Federation of Chess). It is true.

Just the number of moves possible in the first 10 moves of chess is 8 digits.

In my research on atoms and the universe as they pertain to chess moves, i learned that a typical chess game consists of 40 pairs of moves from the players.
