Review: Google Chrome has become surveillance software. It’s time to switch.

You open your browser to look at the web. Do you know who is looking back at you?

Over a recent week of web surfing, I peered under the hood of Google Chrome and found it brought along a few thousand friends. Shopping, news and even government sites quietly tagged my browser to let ad and data companies ride shotgun while I clicked around the web.

This was made possible by the web’s biggest snoop of all: Google. Seen from the inside, its Chrome browser looks a lot like surveillance software.

He's not trying to be funny. He's asking for links.

Busted. Seriously though, Stapes has mentioned Bing as being the last major search engine available where you aren't being watched. You can throw that out window. Earlier this week, one of top lawyers in Odessa Tx was arrested for child porn charges. Reading the article, his IP was alerted to LE by something called "Microsoft/ Bing" alert system. Beware, you can do more jail time for browsing the internet than if you actually shot said child.

I have Google Chrome on my task bar, but I never use it. I don't know if Firefox is any safer than Chrome, but that's the only web browser I use.

MS's new Edge will be based on the open-source version of Chrome, Chromium, and not on Chrome itself. Both the new Edge and Google Chrome use Chromium as a code base, then add their own proprietary mess on top for added "features". Like more video codecs and Flash support and auto-updates and spying code.

Download Chromium and try it out for yourself. In the Linux world, while we can get a native version of Chrome, there really isn't any need, Chromium works just fine. And if you're that concerned about added "features", you can comb through the code and compile your own executable. Others do that, in fact, and you can snip Chromium down or fancy it up in almost any way you want.

I think everybody saw this coming decades ago. New tech- 1990's forward. Total "Wild West" atmosphere for 20 years. You knew LE and the service providers would clamp down tighter than shit sooner rather than later.
