WTF Bank Account!?

So I sit down to pay my monthly bills this morning and I'm going through April's expenses via my online bank account and I notice that on April 26th a "Miscellaneous Debit" of $5610 was made to my checking account. As I clearly didn't withdraw that amount on the 26th I immediately thought, "what the fuck is this?"

So I call my local branch and pose that specific question and get a few muddled "hmms" before the lady on the line says, "whoops, it looks like someone transposed the last number of their account incorrectly and we thought it said 7 instead of 1." So I say, "wait a minute, all someone needs to do is write down an account number and you'll give them 5 grand of my money?" To which she replies, "yeah that's why we encourage customers to balance their checkbooks to make sure these get caught." To which I replied, "are you kidding me!?"

At any rate, she promised to have the funds returned today but I'm sitting here like wtf!? how is this shit possible?

I check my accounts online at least 2x a week, sometimes more. I had something similar happen with my previous credit union, checked my balance and saw it practically at zero. Yea, WTF?! Ran down to the branch, got told "oopsies!..." Then hear these infamous words: "well, this is going to a few days to sort out." Er, and what about the several outstanding checks I've written? "We'll cancel the fees." And if it'd been a week or more until I found it? "We may not have been able to do much about it." Closed that account and moved to a better credit union.

Also, last month, not one but two of my credit cards had fraudulent charges on them. These are cards that sit in my checkbook I keep in a locked drawer and only use for rotating charges. Over a thousand bucks in charges I would have never made. Fuck, there's probably over a dozen rotating charges I've got to straighten out now.

My wife gets an email every time there is activity on our personal bank accounts. Plus she looks at it every few days online via the app.

I balance my 3 corporate accounts every few weeks via online activity. Since I buy a lot of stuff online for the office and home and sales tax isn't known when I order, it needs constant adjustments.

The bank likely would have eventually found it when they audited activity.

We purposely look poorer than we are when we go out because;
We dont give a fuck that you think we look poor
People usually have more sympathy for poorer looking folks with kids and will likely take less advantage
What would they steal anyway?

I've had one issue in 21 years of online banking, and fortunately caught it quick.

A test withdrawal was made on my account. It was a weird number that ended with a little "v". I was informed that the withdrawal was made using the Visa debit feature of the debit card.

That feature is now disabled on my card.

What he's trying to say is that when he takes his wife and kids to the Sizzler buffet, they dress in t shirts and sweat pants so the people at the restaurant don't expect a tip or give them any trouble for taking all the sweet n low and silverware.

The fact that the banks put the onus on it's customers to find bank fuck ups in their accounts is stunning. So, if for whatever reason you don't happen to catch a fraudulent, or bank error withdrawal of a bunch of money from your account, then that's too bad? That is fucked.

the thread started going toward people stealing peoples money from their cards. There, does that help with your "reading comprehension."

true story. Many years ago, I had a bank account in my daughter's name. A savings account. The purpose of the account was to make an auto withdrawal every month to buy Disney stock (since she was hooked on Disney movies, etc.). Anway, she was under 10 years old. There was only one transaction a month on that account to Disney.

Anyway, we get a statement one month and there's been around 15 checks written off that account (pizza, groceries, beer, etc). So, I call the bank and start trying to figure it out. They determined that someone that worked inside the bank, in another city, had given that account number (along with others) to someone else who ordered checks for it and started using them. They had fired the employee, reimbursed the account and changed the account number.

Well, I had the cancelled checks, that I had faxed them copies. The checks had the person's name and DL number on it. I talk to a police detective in that city that had been assigned the case and checked in with him every once in a while. His basic answer each time was "yeah, we are still investigating, but so far nothing. These things usually don't get solved". So, with about 5 minutes of google and publicdata.com, i find where the guy lives, his address, his license plate number, his telephone number, etc. I call the detective back with the info and he didn't even seem to care.

The moral of the story is that you can order checks on an account with only the account number. When the guy ordered the checks he even had his name and a fake address on them. Neither the name or address matched the account. Deluxe checks just mailed him checks for that account in his name. Also, the police give zero fucks. And last, the bank doesn't care at all, other than to credit the account. They don't care that you have to fuck with every place a check was written (after the account was closed), by providing paperwork showing the fraud, etc. Its a major hassle well beyond getting the account closed.

If you have an account number you can order checks from an on line printer for about 10 bucks, with your choice of designs.

Has the obvious solution to this problem been suggested?. Stop doing your financials on-line. Nothing to hack. Banks still send out monthly paper trails. The only thing I touch financially are sites like Amazon with vise like security,

Exactly what year was this when Google and publicdata.com existed alongside pizza places and grocers who took checks?

Yea, something similar happened to my now wife with an old boyfriend that cleaned out her bank account with some major fraud. Including using another woman. Over $25K in completely fraudulent charges. She takes the evidence to the local sherrif's office, where they proceed to tell her "usually in these cases we find the victim gave the suspect the chance to use her account, and we can't press charges." Didn't even bother to take a police report or review her evidence. She locks the shit stain out of her house, and he continues his trail in St Pete and Tarpon Springs, taking over $50K from two other women. Again, neither the SPPD nor the TPPD won't write up a report and does jack-shit about.

The other woman signed my wife's name to a credit application to buy a jet-ski. The salesman even said she didn't look a thing like my wife, nor use the same signature. Orlando PD seriously could not have cared less, and again, even with pressure from the jet-ski shop, they refused to write up a report. Simple slam-dunk of a case, and the police did nothing to help in any of the fraud cases. My wife was still dealing with the after-effects of all that fraud ten years later, and we've found no evidence he's ever been charged with any financial fraud with the at least six women my wife has discovered he'd defrauded over the years.

Jeez that blows. Is there another avenue you could pursue? Like could you sue him personally? It seems like with a mountain of evidence something should be able to get done somewhere or somehow.
