When I was a member of the AFL/CIO in college, I found them very reasonable.
They did screw over the part timers though. All the full timers got raises on the agreement part timers wouldn't get one for a long time. Of course we still had to pay our union dues for their quality representation.

Hello. The 1910/ 20''s are calling. Back when it was needed. Federal workers right laws since then have made 97% of Union activity a racket/useless. Dues money machines greasing the local political pockets. Hello 2020.

I had/have a skill. I wasnt a general laborer and was never in a union and made good money because my skill was in demand. That said, blue collar folk DO owe a debt of gratitude to the unions of the past. There is no denying this. That doesnt mean that many union jobs arent incredibly overpaid for the job being done. I used to supervise UAW workers making 130k per year for LITERALLY putting a washer on a component and pushing a button. Thats fucking ridiculous. Unions today in some places, from my experience, exist to protect piece of shit workers and collect dues. When unions and management work together it can be a great thing. An antagonistic union will drag a company down in no time flat and then when the company folds or moves they are bitching. I've seen both.

Your pay for your skill was enhanced by union activity. And the unions are usually antagonistic in response to an antagonistic company. The UAW didn't happen and continue to exist because GM was so great to the employees on their own.

i worked on a job, many many years ago, building a conveyor system. It started under a railroad spur to load an under ground hopper. After the concrete structure and tunnel were finished, the railroad had to come in and lay the track over the hopper and connect it to the spur. Holy shit. A job that should have taken a couple of days took weeks. If they needed to pick up something that two guys could easily have picked up, they would shut down and wait for a machine and a particular crew to come in, because that was their job. It would have been seriously funny if we weren't under such a time constraint. there were times that i wanted to just do stuff for them, but they refused that emphatically. it had to be done their way and with their tools and with the right crew for each individual task.

Sure. Nobody will ever deny the great good Unions did for the good of the workers when the country was industrializing and workers were treated like surfs/ slaves. Deaths on the jobs weren't even mentioned. Fast forward to the 80's when Detroit Unions were demanding $20/ hr minimums when the companies were under attack by the Japanese companies. If you will do a little research, you will notice that companies are moving to States that don't require Union membership. Do a little more research and you will find the workers in those States are making more money even before you factor in their counterpart Union dues per month, Hello 2020. Dead (almost- still needed in small instances) labor movement.

Anybody else notice the economic news coming out of Washington the last month. Have to wade through the Mueller report BS spewed by the media. Remember Obama stating that everybody better get used to 2% GDP growth at best. Dems lecturing workers in rust belt states that "their jobs are never coming back". 2019 1st quarter GDP growth at at staggering 3%+. Just announced April numbers, 270,000 added jobs, blowing by the estimate and unemployment at 3.6%-the lowest in half a Century. So, spudoc. which economic system do you wish to live under?

No organized labor working on behalf of the worker guarantees these big corporations like Amazon will continue to run their employees into the ground, keep them in fear for their job by unilaterally firing the slowest guy/gal and keeping them at a wage level that doesn't make them starve but sure doesn't let them get ahead. What goes around comes around. Sooner or later these sheep will get tired of getting kicked around and Unions might start to look appealing again.
I had 18 years with the IBEW and was part of 3 large labor strikes. It felt great to know you had some power against these 1% elitist assholes.
