One simple communication or swallowing of pride might have saved millions of lives:
"Hello, this is the President of the United States. If you do not surrender by tomorrow, 2 of your major cities will be destroyed and millions of your people will be killed. We wish to avoid this. The choice is up to you.
Regards,
President Truman
They actually considered not surrendering after the second bomb hit but the emperor let them know he would not publicly support them.

There is also a very strong argument that the nuclear weapons really had no impact on Japanese decision on whether to surrender. That argument says the deciding factor was the entry of the Soviet Union into the Pacific Theater.CaptQuint wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:33 pmJapanese Military was fanatical, almost a coup detat at the endspudoc wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:29 pmThis is quite correct and the Japanese military government didn't really think the A-bomb was any more devastating than the incendiary raids.CaptQuint wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:48 pmThe US firebombing of Tokyo killed far more Japanese than the A Bombs

They actually used the one they were more sure would work first (the Uranium bomb). They didn't even bother testing it, the Nevada test was a more complicated Plutonium device they were less sure of.
Re: Easily the most vile thing the US govt has ever done in history
Actually it is. You are missing the BIG PICTURE (since you seem to be a fan of capital letters tonight). Sure, other ranchers along with Goodnight were appalled at the decimation of these majestic animals and took steps locally to save the species. Most don't realize the fame the Goodnight name attracted in the late 1800's. Over public apathy over this and many other mass exterminations occurring at the same time, Goodnight went to Washington DC and and lobbied the national government to get involved in saving the species and he succeeded in getting TDR to later lend massive support to the cause. I stand by my statement.Flumper wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:31 pmthe point is that you said Goodnight was, DIRECTLY, responsible for saving the buffalo from extinction. That is far from the truth.WestTexasCrude wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:27 pmGoodnight donated a portion of his growing bison herd for the reintroduction of the species into Yellowstone National Park in 1902. Yeah, real minor.

And it probably was actually more important that they had the material ready for the Uranium bomb a couple of months before the second Plutonium one.CaptQuint wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:57 pmI forgot they used two different bombs, Little boy was uranium and fat man was plutonium

Talk about WWII US propaganda. 2 incidents come to mind. The Trinity Project is supposed to be this super-secret program like a vise. Soviets had their spies in early and often. Ask me about the 2. I think you will find them informative.

#1/ So the Trinity Project is this super secretive project locked down tight. August 1945, 99% of the Japanese Navy is locked in harbor due to fuel/ weapons shortages due to the Navy/ Submarine embargo. Hell, using their battleships as anti-aircraft platforms. Boom- a fully fueled, totally weapon equipped submarine magically appears out of nowhere in the middle of the Pacific and sinks(Indianapolis) the one ship involved in delivering components of the atomic Bomb. You will love #2.

#2/ Tinian Island- Marshall Islands. Runways for the bombings of Japan. Epi-center of the atomic bombs attacks. Runways run through the center of the island. The area for assemblies of the A-Bombs is NE of the airfields. Less than a week before Hiroshima, lookouts notice a strange looking ship approaching the area. When challenged, it made a run for the area and something like 50 of the same as Japanese Seals jumped overboard to attack the area. Killed before they made the beach. Classified for 50 years.
