if you tell your stock broker that you want to reinvest dividends, then that money is automatically used to buy more shares (at whatever that day's price is) or fraction of shares of the same stock. So, if you own $10,000 of SONY and it pays you a $500 dividend, then if SONY stock is at $250 per share that day you would get 2 more shares of SONY stock added to what you already own.

If, however, you tell your stock broker not to reinvest dividends, then you get the $500 put into your account as cash and you can withdraw it if you want. You would owe income tax on it, though, either way.
