Seriously, I know some young people who don't know how to do that!

or count back change without a calculator.....sad
True story.
I was in a Burger King and their cash registers were down. They were taking orders with pens and paper. My order came to $9.65. I gave the cashier a $10.00 bill. She had a panicked look on her face and was just holding her pen above the paper. There was a lineup behind me and I didn't want to embarrass her so I leaned forward and quietly whispered "35 cents". Her shoulders dropped and she whispered back "Thank you".
Later, I found myself wondering how much money that Burger King lost that day. Because I can guarantee you that not a single one of those orders had the tax calculated into them.

Want to really see panic set in on their faces...…….Example: Go to register and they ring up Item for .76 cents....you have your dollar out so they punch in one dollar that shows .24 cents back...….Say hold on a second...here is a penny so you can hand me back a quarter.

"WTF are you giving me that for? That's too much"
So you can give me a quarter back.
"I don't understand what your trying to do Sir"
I stopped doing that years ago. It makes me feel sad for them.

This probably isn't something that most people do, but i think its important to understanding how something works that is very important in life.

How to construct a loan payment and how it is calculated. Now most people won't remember the formula for calculating a monthly loan payment, but it can be easily found.

Payment = (monthly interest rate) x (Amount of Loan) / [ 1 - (1 + monthly interest rate)^- # loan payments ]

The important thing here is that if the interest rate is 7%, that is an annual number. For the formula you have to divide 7 by 12 to get monthly interest.

Similarly, if the loan is for 30 years, then the number of loan payments is 30 x 12 or 360.

-------------------------------

Say you buy a car for $30,000. They tell you its going to be a 5 year loan and the interest is 6%. What is the payment?

Interest is 0.06 / 12 = 0.005. Number of payments are 5 x 12 = 60

Payment = (0.005 x 30,000) / [ 1 - (1 + 0.005)^ -60 = $579.98. So your payment will be $579.98 every month for 5 years.

Now, its important to know how to calculate the remaining balance at any point in time.

For payment #1 the balance is $30,000. at one month that loan as accumulated interest of 30,000 x 0.005 = $150. So when you make your payment, the first $150 of the $579.98 goes to interest, The remaining reduces the principal. $30,000 - 429.98 = $29,570.02.

Month 2, the remainint balance is $29,570.02. accumulated interest is 29,570.02 x 0.005 = $147.85. The remaining principal is now 29,570.02 - 579.98 + 147.85 = $29,137.89.

And so on until you get to the last month (month 60) where the entire payment = the remaining balance.

Most people will roll their eyes at all of that, but if a kid learns that at an early age, and creates a table for each loan they get, they will begin to understand the real effects of interest and how much money is really spent on a home or car.

Basic Respect..

Seems kids don't respect adults anymore.. Not their parents, their teachers, bosses etc. This isn't their fault but the fault of their parents.. Seems this generation was raised by a generation of parents who wanted to be friends with their children, not actual parents.

This made me think of a sad thing that happened whilst me and Mrs. CHEEZY were having dinner with friends (more like acquaintances, really) of ours and a couple of our kids. At one point while waiting for the food the dad tells his daughter to put away her phone and she looks at him and tells him to shut up. I nearly fell out of my seat. My daughter looked at her like "holy shit, did you just actually say that to your dad?" It was a bit awkward for awhile after that and I felt bad for the guy.

There is no lack of respect issue. Respect is earned. That seems to be a tough pill to swallow for older generations because they think they're entitled to it simply because of a station in life.

Every generation has said this about the next generation since forever. People bitching about the "everyone gets a trophy" generation. Those 7 years old aren't buying trophies to hand out to everybody that participated, the dopey parents are.

Maybe respect is not the right term. Civility. Social skills.
I’ve talked to young people who looked at me like I have 2 heads. No idea how to talk to an adult. Maybe no father at home?

Social skills are definately lacking, also the understanding that you aren't going to make good money at your jobs until you learn them or work into a better job.

If I can put my cranky old man pants for a second I feel too many kids hide behind phony "social anxiety" or "autism spectrum" self diagnoses. They are convinced (or have been convinced) that they have disorders when they are really experiencing normal fears and self doubts that just come with being alive. So they never face their fears and grow as person because they can't go to the club or ask that person on a date because of their "disorder".

I've seen that with my own daughters. My oldest ran for the antidepressants as soon as she could convince her mom she needed them, then the only shrink in the area would ask simply "did you have any bad days?" Then jack up the dosage. I have ADD. I was diagnosed through several tests and spent my childhood being a test bed for different meds that wouldn't work because I relied on them instead of using them as an aid. Since I turned 17 I swore those meds off and fought to learn how to live with it. Just means I'm a bit more absent minded then most other people usually.

Better living through chemistry, amirite? After multiple suspensions for cutting class I forced to see the school districts headshrinker. After speaking to me for 30 minutes or so there was a recommendation for Zoloft or some shit. No thanks Doc, turns out I was just a shithead teenager that was more interested in drinking beer and listening to Metallica than being trapped in classroom being taught shit that I already knew.
