Don't see why you'd ever need 1 gig on a home connection, anything over 25 meg will let you stream HD. I guess it's something to bring up at dinner parties.

Try 3 in a residence (one a teenager) each with a phone, a tablet and a laptop add on a security system with off site video storage, the bread winners desktop, two additional customer specific laptops and a pair of servers.

Admittedly only two in my household currently and in the case of hd viewing it's generally a joint activity. But even 3 simultaneously viewing HD with a fourth line uploading security footage in real time and also HD leaves you way short of needing a gigabyte.
