Agree- it's actually pretty amazing. it's an original thermostat in this house from 1986- I've never replaced one- I get the procedure, just do not see the need to for all this wireless, pre-programmed BS. Thus my point. Point to 72 degrees. Select Heat or cold. I bought a programmable thermostat maybe ten years ago, $50 to $100, no idea but it wasn’t much. It was simple enough that someone as clueless as me was able to figure out how to install it. The more I thought about it today, I can sure see why for some people a programmable thermostat isn't just a good idea but one that pays the extra cost pretty quick. Commute to work- house empty for 10 hours a day. In the winter time I have it reduce the temp in the house to save some on energy costs and because you sleep better when it’s a little cooler.
