I agree with you. Take the number of US tourists to DR over say a 3 year period. Count the number of deaths. Calculate the avg and I'm guessing it's in line with the norm. The whole story thing reeks of lobbying effort before the media from some people with financial interests in say the Bahamas, Belize, Mexico Yucatan area, etc.

one problem with that is that the tourists going to the Dominican Republic (probably) don't include dying cancer patients, late stage dimentia people, extremely old people, gang bangers in the inner city, etc. So, just going by normal death rates would yield no valuable information.

But, if you could isolate relatively healthy people, middle age and younger, and determine the odds of dying on a couple of day vacation, then you might get some results.

You have to also consider how many people from other countries are dying there.
