Twin stepsons who are druggies, whatever is available. In and out of jail since 15, now 32. Both are supposedly clean now and found God, but are the main reason for the wife and I separating. I already tried to help them, give them a home and food, but only would up getting a bunch of my guns stolen and my home disrespected. After they got out of jail this last time she wanted to give them another chance but I refused to let them back in my home, so she chose them. Walked out and left me with a mortgage and thousands of her CC debt on my cards. Now the church has her hooked and every time the doors are open she's there with them.

Me? I'll sit here and sip my bourbon. Most times, the silence is pretty damn nice. I'll drink too much some times, but my ass works every day and pays the bills.

Dude, its life. I didnt deal the hand. I'm OK, I have you guys to vent to, or bitch at, or whatever. :D But I really do appreciate you asking. Everyone should be more concerned as to how their "friends", be it IRL or cyber are doing. Before you know it, they are gone... just like Stymie.

My whole family was: Mom and Dad, and all their extended families down to 1st cousins.
My brother in law smokes outside. His dad died of lung cancer and yet he still won't quit.
I have a co-worker who smokes.
In my entire extended family I know 2 smokers - even the heroin cousin doesn't smoke.

I don't know anyone else who smokes. Asked all my nephews and nieces and none of their friends smoke. My wife has a family reunion where about 80 people show up for 2 days every year - not a single smoker. Had a friends get together last fall with about 50 adults - not a single smoker. It's pretty amazing how that's changed.
Had uncles who smoked 2-3 packs a day. Both type 1 diabetics, lived to around 80, died of diabetes related stuff. Lung cancer seems to be a thing not everyone gets.

My oldest is at the cabin with this weekend. She likes her weed but isn't stupid about it and I got to take her to a local bar where I knew they wouldn't bother carding her. It was nice to be able to spend time with her.

It's cool to have a drink with your kids. When my youngest and her friend visited last year they were of drinking age here but not in the US. They had fun sampling umbrella drinks and we had a few glasses of wine.

When my son first moved in with me when he was 12, he got really deep in "Pirates of the Carribean" movies. Some of the characters are always taking a big swallow of rum, and he liked to pretend to do the same with an old curved whiskey bottle we had in the house. So I went to a good liquor store and bought a nice and not cheap bottle of a well recommended Jamaican white rum. I sat him down and told him, if you want to pretend, pretend with this! He took one swig, and I've never seen his eyes ever get so big since. He was aghast at the idea this is what the characters were drinking, he just thought it was horrible. Still loved the movies, hated the rum drinking.

He's turned into a surprising tee-totaller to this day. He *may* have a glass of wine or a small beer with a meal out or not, and he does love a good small bottle of sake with his beloved Japanese cuisine. But when he cooks at home (and he's a wonderful chef!), he will not drink anything but water.
If you can't be a good example, you can still serve as a horrible warning.
