CBS Chicago, citing unnamed police sources, reported the alleged motive on Monday
The sources say that the January 22 letter he claimed to receive which called him a 'black f*g' did not get enough attention
There is no record of the letter in the public domain until after the January 29 incident
It was reported at the time that Fox gave Smollett extra security after it but that he turned it down
The studio would not confirm that the letter was legitimate nor would it comment on the ongoing developments on Monday
Smollett is now preparing to be questioned again by Chicago Police Department
Brothers Ola and Abel Osundairo, who were questioned for two days last week, have been released without charge
Sources say they told cops Smollett paid them to carry out the attack
