its mind blowing to think that with no more than compasses and stars, etc. 2.5 years of wandering around and keeping time with clocks they had to wind. and they had to draw maps every day of each day's journey and this was a game you could never stop or take a break. If you forgot to wind a clock you had to spend a bunch of time using stars and shadows to figure out what time it was. the level of focus is hard to imagine now.
