Hey Quint. You ever watch the battleship New Jersey youtube channel?

I do, I really don't like that Ryan guy though. It makes it hard to watch as he is a terrible public speaker. Ryan should write a script and have someone else do the speaking.

Exactly. The subject matter is great. Side note I have a wine bottle stopper made from a piece of the Iowas deck before it went to So Cal.

The mechanical device that rotates the gun will allow you to shoot in all directions, but it will block the gun movement when you get within 30 degrees or so of the forward cockpit and it will surely block any gun movement toward that tail assembly.Charliesheen wrote: ↑Sat Aug 28, 2021 11:35 pmCan someone ‘splain to me how you keep from shooting your own tail assembly off?

Re: CQ's Military thread
The comment "smartass" is not needed. OK. Thanks. When they first mounted a machine gun on bi-planes in early WW1, it had to be front shooting so the pilot could use it. How to not shoot off the propellers? They figured out the rate of gunfire vs propeller rotation. That was difficult. This was not. Picture the machine gun. There was gun mount underneath it with gears connected to an electric motor that allowed the gunner to rotate his gun rapidly in 3 dimensions with a simple control. How not to shoot your pilot in the back of the head or shoot off the tail in the heat of battle? The gears were configured so the gun could never be pointed toward the cockpit or tail section. Simple mechanics.Antknot wrote: ↑Sun Aug 29, 2021 12:55 amOk smartass how do you aim from one side to the other if movement is blocked?CentralTexasCrude wrote: ↑Sun Aug 29, 2021 12:03 amThe mechanical device that rotates the gun will allow you to shoot in all directions, but it will block the gun movement when you get within 30 degrees or so of the forward cockpit and it will surely block any gun movement toward that tail assembly.Charliesheen wrote: ↑Sat Aug 28, 2021 11:35 pmCan someone ‘splain to me how you keep from shooting your own tail assembly off?

Wrong there Gomer. The gun had a device called the disconnector (WWI was the mechanical cam interupter) the disconnector was an electric switch that prevented the gun from firing when you didn't want it to like when pointed at the tail. That rear gun in the SBD pictured could not rotate forward so blasting the driver was not an issue.

Fine, it was electrical instead of mechanical. Thanks. You answered his question about why they didn't shoot there tail off. Glad to see some activity around here.
