The Vietnamese position is no military alliances. They do however allow US Navy vessels to visit their ports as they do appreciate our presence in the areaCharliesheen wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 7:16 pmIs there a defense alliance the Vietnamese can join against the ChiComms?

Billy Mitchell was the the General who pissed off the Army pre-WW2.
Hyman Rickover was the Admiral who pissed off the Navy post-WW2.

Re: CQ's Military thread
Rickover was the longest serving member of any military branch (63 years) in the entire history of the US. Served under 13 Presidents (Woodrow Wilson to Ronald Reagan). Pretty much a slap in the face that this boat was built by General Dynamics Electric at Groton Conn. after the fabricated 1982 "scandal" that his enemies forced his retirement. The scandal was the shoddy welding by GD there that they tried to pass off as almost a $Billion overrun to the Navy that Rickover denounced. The Navy caved and paid most of it because they were under pressure to build Reagan's 600 ship Navy. Came across $60,000 in trinkets and gifts Rickover received and never kept and his enemies forced his retirement.

I've been to Electric Boat in Groton twice. For a Christening and a Commissioning. Re: CQ's Military thread
Yeah, I know. They were under pressure, like the Navy in the early 80's to build Reagan's 600 ship navy. Cut corners on the welding that Rickover called them out on. Demanded not one cent of overrun be paid by the Navy. Lehman caved and enemies came up with a fabricated "scandal".CaptQuint wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 1:03 amI've been to Electric Boat in Groton twice. For a Christening and a Commissioning. Re: CQ's Military thread
Still almost unbelievable, that after almost 75 years of the building of Rickover's nuclear Navy, there has never been even one nuclear reactor accident. He built them simple and safe. Compare with the Soviets dismal record when trying to play catch up and deploying experimental technology.

SW1 nuclear reactor system that only needed 2 crew members to run. Compare with the Soviets dismal record when trying to play catch up and deploying experimental technology.

Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum, is shown here during a training exercise while serving with 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. McCollum, along with 12 other service members, was killed during a suicide bombing at the Kubul airport in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021.

On September 15, 1950, 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez, is photographed leading his men of 3rd Platoon, Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, over the seawall on the northern side of Red Beach, as the second assault wave lands at Incheon, Korea.
Lt. Lopez would be killed in action within a few minutes after this photo was taken. He threw himself on top of a hand grenade to shield his men from the blast. He would posthumously receive the Medal of Honor for his selfless act of heroism.

Nimitz liked to joke about the time when Halsey was in full dress uniform in front of a hotel and was approached by a drunk who asked him to hail a cab.
"I am an admiral in the U.S. Navy!" retorted Halsey.
"That's OK," said the drunk. "Then get me a boat!"
