My last laptop was an ASUS, complete pile of dogshit. Having Windows installed did not help

Good 'uns and turds from all the major players in my experience. Pot luck unless you wait a while for model reviews to build up, you can't go by manufacturer.

I too have had good luck with Dell over the years. They're still selling strong these days. I was just at Costco and they had a number of their laptops on display.
